Back in February 1996 the dream team behind Shallow Grave was about to make us a nation of Trainspotters. As Irvine Welsh’s story of Leith junkies exploded onto the big screen The List dedicated six pages of coverage to the film.
To begin with, Fiona Shepherd spoke to the film’s stars Ewan McGregor and Ewen Bremner who shared thoughts on their characters:
Renton is often observing. There’s a lot of him that just goes along passively with what everybody else is doing but he almost always has a critical edge about things in his mind.
— Ewan McGregor
There’s a side of Renton that really appreciates the qualities of Spud - his peacefulness and his innocence - and there’s a part of Spud that really appreciates Renton’s vigour and bravery.
— Ewen Bremner
