their belt, to come to Edinburgh. The play they bring, although it is set in the weeks before Stalin's death, was

' written last year by the French-based

Moldovan writer, Matei Visniec. His title has been rendered rather prosaic in translation, but it certainly sums up the plays subject; that of a yOung Sowet writer attempting to explain

: communism to the inmates of the

Moscow Central Mental Asylum, Yet Tweedie insists that it also hints at the Wicked Moldovan sense of humour that the production exhibits in abundance. (Tim Abrahams)

I William Sutcliffe's New Boy

Teenage kicks

Mark is starting sixth form. He aims to be popular and cool, but most of all he wants a shag. However the appearance of Barry, the envioust good-looking new boy, throws our brainy, nerdy hero into the depths of sexual confusion. Although likened to

a cross between Adrian Mole and

Holden Caulfield, the hormonal angst of William Sutcliffe focuses on more mature teenagers than the former and is more comic than the latter. ’It’s a frank, honest, post-adolescent sexual rites of passage story,’ explains director Russell Labey. Despite the fact that we are party to the conversations of seventeen and eighteen year olds who talk almost constantly about all things sexual, Labey asserts that the play is not overly epriCit ’Sexuality is

a very definite theme, but it is as much about the notion of friendship and the start of adulthood.’ (Dawn Kofie)

COMEDY PREVIEW

Navelgazing

More tales of male inadequacy Honed from their preVious incarnation, the Navelgazers are now a frisky foursome. Their fourth Fringe appearance sees them now all graduated from Edinburgh University and poised to become the next TV comedy sensations, With a sitcom commissioned by Channel 4 and their Current show sponsored by Carlton TeIeVIsion.

Tipped for the top then, the quartet have developed their surreal Journey to the heart of male inadequacy and return With an enhanced verSIon of NavelgaZing. ’Last year was a sketch show but this year we’ve gone for a much more narrative style,’ says one quarter of the team, Jack Brough ’We’re tempted to call it a play but that’s far too dignified.’

PreViously compared to The League Of Gentlemen iii their darkly satirical style, Brough admits that the TV sickos were ’a big influence’, and adds: ’As chance would have it the man that directed them at the Fringe, is now directing us.’ (Catherine Bromley)
