I Back To Basics at Teviot Row Union. 9pm—5am. £10 (£8 in advance from The Fringe box office). 18 Aug only. A double whammy of the stuff clubbing legends are made of as the renowned Leeds night, which has been providing a haven for party people since 1990, joins forces with original dance music Marshall Jefferson, whose early exploits with dance music created the templates for much of what you’ll hear today. And, as if that wasn’t enough to get your attention, regular Back To Basics collaborator James Holroyd will be supplying some hard ‘n’ funky tunes. Elsewhere in the building, catch Edinburgh’s own DJ Kid and Calibre spinning the drum & bass.
I Ballistic at Studio 24. 11pm—5am. £5. 18 Aug. Monthly. The latest venture from The Mission crew concentrates on the contemporary end of the alternative spectrum, with cutting-edge industrial and chemical beats as well as live showcases for up-and-coming bands.

I C.C. Blooms at C.C. Blooms. 10.30pm—5am (bar from 6pm). Free. Weekly. DJ Ally does the decks duty at this gay night with her inimitable selection of high camp and disco classics, moving on to pumped-up house and dance as the evening progresses.
I Club Latino at The Bongo Club. 10.30pm—5am. £8 (£6). 18 Aug. Monthly. Sizzling salsa and lively Latin action from DJ Simon Hodge, with all sorts of extra attractions, including dance classes for those who get there sharp, Capoeira displa s and tast tropical food.

A one-off night of ‘electronic punk rock disco beats’ featuring DJs Mooner, Shawroc and local electronic loons The Magnificents plus live sets from The Squits and the Club Le Bomb Gala Band. Now, we have no idea what they’re talking about, but the fact that one of the bands is from Munich is making us think Kraftwerk.

Peshay brings his jazzy drum & bass to Manga No matter how much planning goes
into a club, sometimes the most successful nights happen by sheer accident. G-Mac, the DJ/promoter behind Scotland's foremost drum 8: bass club, Manga, is no stranger to this phenomenon, responsible as he is for bringing one of the scene’s biggest Dis to his night. 'T hat was the bad summer for guests,’ says G- Mac 'We booked Roni Size and he cancelled and then we booked the Good Looking Records Tour and that was cancelled, so we ended up getting Peshay and it was really, really good. pretty much the biggest.’ Four years on, it's by popular demand rather than by accident that Peshay makes his return to Manga.
The DJ, who worked with L.T.J. Bukem and Goldie in the formative years of drum & bass, cemented his already strong position on the scene last year, with his groundbreaking album Miles From Home. Long-anticipated, the album inspired an entire movement of jazz and funk-infected drum 8: bass and coined the genre that has since been referred to as ‘liquid funk'. As G- Mac rightfully observes, ‘l-le‘s one of the founding fathers of the tough jazz drum & bass style. Basically, there’s no real drum & bass Dis who haven't picked up on what he's done and used it in their production.‘ Continually pushing the boundaries as a solo DJ/producer and in his collaborations with fellow artist Rupert Parkes (aka Photek), Peshay is currently in the studio
working on new material.
The latest in a long line of talent booked to appear at Manga, Peshay joins the likes of Fabio, Dillinja and Kosheen at a night which also showcases the talents of residents G-Mac, DJ Kid, The General and Unify. And future plans include Brazil's DJ Marky and the Movement Records Tour with Jumpin' Jack Frost. ‘I think people now know that whoever we book it’s going to be a killer night,’ says G-Mac. I Golden at Teviot Row Union. 9pm—5am. £10 (£8 in advance from The Fringe box office). 11 Aug only. 805 popster-turned-superstar DJ Boy George is the main attraction as the Clubs Festival manages to tempt Stoke-On- Trent’s superclub away from the sun in Ibiza for one night only. Also on the roster is Golden regular Glen Guest and, somewhere else in the building, local lad and lass Stuart Duncan (Atomic Baby) and Gail Sellars (Shebang) will be showing off their house skills.
I Higher Ground at La Belle Angele. 11pm—5am. Price TBC. 18 Aug only. Mr Todd and Gav Sutherland return for a Festival one-off, which is rumoured to be the last Higher Ground ever. So, if you like your house served deep and funky, then you better get your ass down there. especially as George T from Tribal/Boombox is the guest.
I Jazz Joint at The Jazz Joint. 10pm—5am. £5. Weekly. Jazz gets catapulted into the 215i century when
drum & bass fusionists Rarefaction get hold of it on 11 Aug, while Midnight Blue Band vocalist Subie Coleman returns with her own quintet on 18 Aug. I Lizzard Lounge at La Belle Angele has now finished.
I Loop at The Wee Red Bar. 11pm—4am.
£7 (£5). 18 Aug. Monthly. A two-floor Ealing techno extravaganza featuring Max Duley (Meta), who also happens to share a flat with Oliver Ho, and Andy Maclaughlin (Bush, Figment) alongside ressies Al and Bill on the main floor, with Craig (Curious), Slim Jim (Moo Bar), Julz (Purple Moon) and Kam the Mullet doing the do upstairs. The courtyard will be open for your chilling out pleasure, and there will be light sculptures, tribal drumming and other such goings-on to enhance the atmosphere.
I The Mambo Club at The Cavendish. 10pm—5am. £4 before midnight; £5 after. Weekly. Still going strong after so many years, Sir Ossie provides the reggae, ragga, soul, funk, rap, hip hop and R&B delights.

One of the stalwarts of the scene, his releases include the massively well received Miles From Home, and he’s working on another long player at the moment. He joins another team of drum & bass stalwarts, the residents — that’s G-Mac, DJ Kid, The General, Unify and MC Feelman. llpm-Sam. £5 (£4). 11 Aug. Fortnightly. Alternative tunes from the people who used to hang out in the Victoria Street venue of the same name. Enjoy alternative anthems upstairs, with 805 indie and dance classics in The Cooler. I Mondo at Wilkie House will return in Sep.
I Nature at The Attic. 11pm—3am. £6. Weekly. Deep and funky tunes at this snug little venue, decked out for the occasion with scented candles and pot plants. Don’t think the Nature posse have gone all soft and hippy on us though — they still manage to rustle up an electric atmosphere with some serious decks action. 11 Aug sees a collaboration between Domenic (back from international touring duty due to a broken arm) and Paper Recordings’ Ben Davis, so expect the very best in funky house tunes. On 18 Aug Euan McGuinness joins Domenic for more of the same.
I Noa at Noa. 10pm—5am. Free. Weekly. Jon Flowers in the main room with garage; Paul Dixon through the back with old skool, soul and funk.
I Nomad at Wilkie House. Monthly. Next date 1 Sep with Justin Robertson. I Pillbox at Studio 24. 10.30pm—5am. £8 (£6). 11 Aug. Monthly. A major name adds his stuff to the Pillbox mayhem: Commander Tom of Germany’s Noom Records will be supplying a set of thumping techno-trance of the highest calibre. Supporting him on the main floor are J-Loop, Hwatsong and Johnnie Metronome. Upstairs there’s a breaks showcase from D.E.A. Records, which the humorists at Pillbox are calling ‘Straight Out Of Calton’. Featured are Desiato, Solarized, Morph (live set) and E.N.O., whose nu breaks come from the same stable as Adam Freeland ’s. Up-back (or front depending on your perspective) Ross supplies the drum & bass while Yoghurt Weaver does his psychedelic trance thing.
I Planet Earth at The Citrus Club. 10.30pm—5am. £4. Weekly. A pop-punk- disco selection from those hazy shady days of the 705 and 80s. All you folks who go home sore of throat with stinking clothes will be pleased to know that The Citrus Club now boasts a non-smoking policy in the bar area.
I Pure at The Venue. 10.30pm—5am. £10(£8). 18 Aug only. It’s the last Pure ever, ever, ever (in Edinburgh), so make the most of the night which put Scottish clubbing on the international map. Residents Twitch, Brainstorm, The Bill and Sandy Paris will be banging out the hard and funky tunes in a generally techno manner and, if the last few nights have been anything to go by, you’ll be well advised to start queuing before the doors open at 10.30pm.
