I Electro Unique at La Belle Angele. 11.30pm-5am. £7 (£5). 24 Aug only. A one-off special from Edinburgh’s multi- media experimentalists Underword combining visuals from Phactory and Kohoutek with freestyle beats from Hobbs and Twitch (who they credit as being behind recording duo Mount Florida and club night Optimo — but we don’t forget Pure that quickly!). There will also be live sets from 7 Hurtz (Output Records) and Kovac, and to ensure that the night is truly interactive, clubbers are invited to bring along their own favourite tunes — if your name is drawn from the hat, you’ll get the chance to inflict your selection on the crowds.
I Evol at The Liquid Room. 10.30pm—5am. £4. Weekly. Still going strong, Evol is the city’s longest running indie night. These days, expect a heady mix of the best alternative and crossover tunes, new and old.
I Go Go at The Place. Monthly. 11pm—5am. £5 (£4). 25 Aug. Monthly. If its genuine retro sounds that set your pulse racing then sample the delights on offer at Go Go, from 60$ rock ‘n’ roll, beat and soul to sleazy listening and sexy soundtracks.
I Higher Ground at La Belle Angele. llpm-Sam. £6 (£5). 18 Aug only. Mr Todd and Gav Sutherland return for a Festival one-off, which is rumoured to be the last Higher Ground ever. So, if you like your house served deep and funky, then you better get your ass down there, especially as George T from Tribal/Boombox is the guest.
I Jazz Joint at The Jazz Joint. 10pm—5am. £5. 18 Aug. Weekly. Midnight Blue Band vocalist Subie Coleman returns with her own quintet. Andy B. is the man behind the decks.
I Liuard Lounge at La Belle Angele has now finished.
I Loop at The Wee Red Bar. 11pm—4am. £7 (£5). 18 Aug. Monthly. A two-floor Ealing techno extravaganza featuring Max Duley (Meta), who also happens to share a flat with Oliver Ho, and Andy MacLaughlin (Bush, Figment) alongside ressies Al and Bill on the main floor, with Craig (Curious), Slim Jim (Moo Bar), Julz (Purple Moon) and Kam the Mullet doing the do upstairs. The courtyard will be open for your chilling out pleasure, and there will be light sculptures, tribal drumming and other such goings-on to add entertainment value.
I The Mambo Club at The Cavendish. 10pm—5am. £4 before midnight; £5 after. Weekly. Still going strong after so many years, Sir Ossie provides the reggae, ragga, soul, funk, rap, hip hop and R&B deli hts.

atmosphere with some serious decks action. On 18 Aug, Euan McGuinness joins Domenic (Subculture) for some fine ‘n’ funky tunes, with Pure’s Witch and Matt Grey taking over on 25 Aug.

I Pure at The Venue. 10.30pm—5am. £10 (£8). 18 Aug only. It’s the last Pure ever, ever, ever (in Edinburgh), so make the most of the night which put Scottish clubbing on the international map. Residents Witch, Brainstorm, The Bill and Sandy Paris will be banging out the hard and funky tunes in a generally techno manner and, if the last few nights have been anything to go by, you’ll be well advised to start queuing before the doors open at 10.30pm. I Queer Friday at Ego (formerly Eden). 10pm—5am. £6 (£5) before midnight; £7 (£6) after; or look out for super-dooper Festival discount passes. 18 Aug. Monthly. Tonight’s event is the grand finale of queer ‘Stars In Your Eyes’ so expect plenty of primping, crimping and whimpering as tensions mount. Faces to look out for include Texas and Mary Kiani backing singer Mo Tobias as part of the Nexus Jackson 5 entry, Horse collaborator Tracey Braithwate as Desiree and the manager of Planet Out as Macy Gray.
I Radio Babylon at La Belle Angele. 10.30pm—5am. £5. 25 Aug. Monthly. If magical musical trips are your thing then let the The Merry Pranksters take you on a journey through hip hop, breakbeat, reggae and soul. And, if the travelling should wear you down, don’t worry as hostess Penny Pornstar will be on hand to dish out fresh fruit for your flagging spirits.
I Redspin at The Wee Red Bar will return in October.
I Resistance at The Venue (top floor). 9pm—Sam. Price TBC. 25 Aug. Monthly. Working nine to five, what a way to make a living — especially when we’re talking eight hours of driving techno and hardcore beats. But the Resistance guys have laid on another session anyway, featuring Rotterdam’s DJ Neophyte, who will be showcasing his nu skool gabba sound (we really aren’t joking), acid techno-head D.A.V.E The Drummer (Stay Up Forever), plus local lads Miko Glacid, Zykotik, Rob Noize and DJ 0 - not forgetting Cutthroat and Pulsator, who will fit in an hour of old skool hardcore classics at some point in the evening.

I Salsa Viva at The Venue (top floor). 10.30pm—5am. £8 (£6). 18 Aug. Salsa Viva take over two monthly slots at The Venue. As well as the usual tropical treats from DJ Coco Vega, 18 Aug features a Latin American culture fest, with a set from acclaimed Cuban dance troupe DanzAbierta plus live music as DJ Coco brings his ten-piece salsa outfit Coco Y Latinos along.

Storm-ing beats at this Meta/head: showcase
Since its inception in the summer of 1994 (a certain Goldie was apparently involved), Metalheadz has gone on to establish itself as the drum n’ bass outfit. Full stop. Storm has been there from the start. and the DJ. club promoter and all-round groovemelster is keen to stress that the label is as fresh as it has ever been. ’The 01s and producers that form Metalheadz have always been innovators.‘ she explains. moment for popularity right now, but drum 8: bass grew up with basically no media attention, and it will carry on to survive with very little media attention.’ This year's Edinburgh International Club Festival has been attracting a certain amount of interest in recent weeks. The Teviot-based event has just enjoyed its biggest opening weekend ever, and Storm is happy to be a part of it. 'lt‘s always good to take drum 8: bass elsewhere.‘ she says. 'The Scottish scene surprises me in that there aren't more regular clubs, because every time I play in Scotland the crowds are really up for it. The Metalheadz night Goldie and I played at the Potterrow last year had one of the most awesome vibes I've ever
experienced.’
The Teviot showcase sees Storm joined by fellow Metalheadz Doc Scott and MC Justice, in an evening hosted by local talent DJ Kid alongside Manga regulars G-Mac. The General and MC Feelman. Those who can’t quite wait that long for a fix of bass beats should check the Back to Basics night on Fri 18 Aug. when Calibre and DJ Kid will be taking up residency downstairs, also under the
auspices of Different Class 015.
One woman who won’t be there is Storm’s DJing partner Kemistry, who died last year in a car accident. ’I never felt I’d have the strength to carry on without Kemistry,’ she says, ’But it was always our love of the music that brought us through. I know she would have been unhappy if I had thrown it all away.’ A lot of club-goers would doubtless agree. (James Smart)

Apex’s sister club lays on a night billed as ‘hard techno of dubious parental heritage’ as Neil T., Phil Zero and Kam the Mullet take to the decks. Cheap beer and friendly faces also feature in the event’s multifarious attractions.
