Robyn Hitchcock The Scotsman Assembly. 3-5 Aug. I 0pm. After testing the waters at the end of last year‘s Fringe. Robyn Hitchcock. standard-bearer for psychedelic English songwriting. has returned for a three-night Assembly Rooms stint. ‘lt's essentially the same show as I‘ve been doing.‘ he warns. ‘I don't tilt it upwards or anything.‘ Nevertheless. Hitchcock has been hard at work in other areas. He's preparing a novel. which if you hang out with comedians (and Hitchcock does) doesn‘t seem out of the ordinary. His new traflic-cone art also makes him more merchandising money than T- shirts ever did. He‘s still touring with the recently reformed line-up of his old cult band The Soft Boys. and has a couple of concert films in the vaults: one by Jonathan Demmc. which he can't get released. and a video of a Hitchcock and Grant Lee Phillips show
Two years hence looms his 50th birthday. and Hitchcock is already plotting a special show to mark it. ‘l‘m talking about doing a tour of Britain with a shrubbcry. I'd have people coming out of it and reciting bits of my writings. l'd appear and sing in it. It'd be a mise-en-scene. Is that the phrase? Or a tableau. But without 'any nudes in it.‘
