()nc of the key figures in the development of modern art in Britain was Roland Penrose ( 1900-1984). This major exhibition which coincides with the publication of Roland I’t’nmst': The Friendly .S'urreuli'st a biography by his son Antony Penrose. reveals his work as a surrealist artist. exhibition organiser. collector and writer. Penrose was friends with a number of surrealists including lirnst. Miro and Picasso and was respon- sible for the first surrealist exhibition to come to London in 1936. To complement the exhibition. the National Gallery of Modern Art is hosting an exhibition of photographs by Penrose's wife. Lee Miller. See llitlist.
