And if you were listening to Beat 106 radio on the ouch early morning of Friday 3 August. you will have heard the station's DJs nursing their hangovers on air. Excellent. I In case you missed the Angelo Badalamenti feature in the last issue of The List. here's a reminder that a Reel Life masterclass by David Lynch's favourite soundtrack composer is a late addition to the Film Festival programme.

I Your starter for ten: What is a foley artist? No? Well, this year two Fringe plays make use of

a third show even called Foley (by the Corn Exchange at the Traverse). Answers on a postcard and the winner receives a free List pass to all Festival shows. Not really. Foley artists are the people who do the sound effects on the radio and backstage at the theaUe.

I They call Edinburgh-based Ricardo Pinto a sCience fiction novelist. But Pinto is totally obsesswe about his research and goes to extreme lengths to ensure that the fantasy worlds he created on the page are believable. For example. Pinto employs geologists and mathematicians to calculate the exact lengths and directions of

. . . shadows. He's also been known to use Edinburgh Zoo for the colour of a flamingo‘s tongue. He's even created his own language. Ouya. and consulted experts to help deVise a plaUSible monsoon. In the context, it might be more accurate to refer to Pinto as a science fact writer.

great tune. I Want You is just genius.

2 Kid About It A brilliant song. brilliantly constructed. I particularly liked the fact that in the chorus he drops an octave. It's very grave. I wish I‘d done that. very hard to sing.

3 Shipbuilding This song just sums what was going on at the time. it‘s a brilliant way of saying. ‘Look at the Falklands War. look at Thatcher‘. A deep political comment.

4 Let Him Dangle In this song he encapsulates everything I would like to say to people who believe in the death penalty.

5 Alison A classic. a pop song that can be sung as a standard or a soul tune. Just a classic clever song.

Rio, Pleasance, 4.30pm and M Woulda Been Nice, Pleasance, 4.30pm) picks five playwrights.

1 Tennessee Williams My stuff is a cross between Williams. O'Neill, Orton and Pinter. Take their first letters and it spells WOOP! Which will hopefully be the audience reaction to my plays. I especially like Tennessee Williams' characters.

2 Eugene O’Neill My director Laurence Boswell suggested reading Long Day's Journey Into Night after I'd written Weekend In Rio. My God. the morphine- addicted mother in the attic is like one of my characters! Osmosis.

3 Joe Orton I love What The Butler Saw. I saw a production with Sheila Gish, there were so many laughs it was hard to hear the lines.

4 Harold Pinter People tell me I should ‘get' Harold Pinter. but l don't. I must be influenced by him.

5 Nobody There's no playwright Number Five. Kill the competition.
