Basically the premise for Kendall's show is her warfare obsession and this is her self- conscious comic history lesson which tweaks out the ironies of war through a doubting female perspective. Kendall touches on everything from America‘s firearm culture and .\'B("s footage choreography to national stereotypes and even questionable Nazi apparel. transforming hatred and the downright nonsensical into intelligent and

Fucking Our Fathers: Scott Capurro and John Cardone

0... Assembly Rooms. until 27 Aug. midnight. Men of a certain age. suggested Freud. want to kill their dads and sleep with their mums. Sigmund was thinking more of infants than of tliiny-soiiiething gay men from San Francisco. but that hasn't stopped Capurro and Cardone from exploring the Oedipus attraction from the queer angle. Their show, wedged in the comedy section of the Fringe programme (presumably to cash-in on Capurro‘s stand-up cachet) owes more to theatre. and features the pair debating their desire for ‘hot muscle daddies’ although they fortunately stop short of discussing how to dispose of their mothers.

Capurro plays John. a jobbing assistant film director who meets his Starbucks- serving friend Danny (Cardone) every Saturday in a bar to drink. bitch and talk about failed relationships and bad sex. It sounds like a bad sitcom. but the two create real pathos and humour about a subject that could easily have engendered nothing but predictable jokes.

The pair debate the relative strengths of therapy and psychoanalysis. men in uniform and email voyeurism before John has graphic. hilarious sex with a bisexual rent boy and Danny fobs off a rather unconvincing Death. After his attention- seeking ‘Holocamt. Scliolocatist' gags last year. it‘s no surprise to see (‘apurro wading into a controversial subject area. but it is surprising to see him make good theatre out of it. (James Smart)

inventive comedy fodder.

It's all very worthy. keen. thought- provoking stuff but ultimately neglects the laughs which would make it all worthwhile. Technical shortcomings and a bewilderingly sentimental ending don't aid the effort. A

courageous exercise. but lacking in execution.

Matt King Is A Child Assembly Rooms. until 27 Aug. ll.45pm. Touted as Australia's favourite stand-up. King is a master of intelligent surreal associations and throws away the script for an expedition into the recesses of his mind.

Daniel Kitson: Love, Innocence and the Word Cock Pleasance. until 27 Aug. 10.30pm. ()nce known for his endless profanity and spiralling improv, the highly acclaimed Kitson has discovered the advantages of having material and doesn't believe that vulgarity and intelligence are mutually exclusive. Krater Comedy Club Komedia Southside. until 26 Aug. l2. 10am. He toured Scotland looking for a spare pan for his car and now Stephen Grant uses his newly-aquired knowledge to comic effect. Oh. and there‘s guests too in this late night cabaret.

O Lano 8t Woodley: Bruiser 00000 The Famous Spiegeltent. until 26 Aug. 8pm. You don't expect Australians to be good at surrealist comedy. but Lano and Woodley are masters of the art. Bruiser sees them tackle the masculine psyche in a show whose apparently anarchic nature belies its meticulously planned gags.

The largely irrelevant plot sees the pair fall in love with the same non-existent woman. try to avoid the same puffed-up bruiser (who. bizarrely. sounds like a cross between Michael Caine and Danny from \Mthnail and l) and generally tie each other in knots while swapping accents and costumes like their show depends on it. And with their bubbling chemistry. the duo ensure that this chaotic.

0.. (iilded Balloon at chiot Row House. [bill l2 Aug. 5pm. ‘Remember. here at ('hutney 's. a tidy gym is a happy gym.‘ Just one of the ironic platitudes offered by the painfully enthusiastic fitness instructor of ‘(‘hutney 's Health ('lub', Set in this torture palace. Life ls Sweat presents a series of satirical sketches exploring the sordid underworld of that British obsession keeping fit. With characterisation often reminiscent of Victoria Wood‘s stock. there are some well-observed moments.

However. the dialogue is hampered by a ratherjaded and unimaginative Use of stereotypes. Some surreal touches pick it up though. and a slow motion pas de deux to ‘Magic Moments' by pot-bellied men is truly just that. Maybe a little more time down the gym is needed to really tone up. (Ruth Hedges)
