'l‘wo Burmese comedians known as the MOustache Brothers were released from prison on 13 July. followmg international pressure from Amnesty International. Pa Pa Lay and Lu Zaw had been arrested in 1996 following a performance in which they Iampooned the government.

At last year’s Edinburgh Festival. Amnesty focused attention on their plight and asked audiences to send postcards of protest to the Burmese government. Over 2000 were sent and in particular the Irish comedian. Ed Byrne. was instrumental in encouraging this. Amnesty's Scottish fundraiser, Geoff Pope describes Lay and Zaw's release as “wonderful news'. But. as everyone knows. this is unfortunately a drop in the ocean. and Amnesty is again collaborating With the Fringe to promote suppon for those unrepresented and Silenced.

Following the success of last year's event. there Will be an Amnesty benefit. Stand Up For Freedom, featuring Ed Byrne (his only Fringe appearance). The Nualas. Boothby Graffoe and Ross Noble at the Assembly Rooms on 13 August. 1 1.45pm.
