Locked deep underground with the narcoleptic (‘olonel. the male and female privates are in the process of having their humanity pummelled otit of them in readiness for their mission of coldly procreating to repopulate the world. Dealing in an often humorous manner with issues of humanity. this dark comedy by Keefe Healy is performed with style and panache by the two young actors. There is no doubt either that they are true experts in that high tradition of mime made popular by the French and expounded most powerfully by litienne Decroux. Yet there is something. well. just a little pretentious about them. There is no problem with the clever choreography or the group‘s sheer balletic ability. It‘s just that the moments of humour that lighten the load of some pretty turgid text are all too infrequent. Perhaps it is because Entangled Lives is a piece that aspires to too grand a meaning than perhaps it is capable of expressing. (Tim Abrahams)

Coriolanus O.” Teatr Modjesktt, Old College Quad. until 2] Aug, 9.30pm. For about 70 minutes last Saturday night. i watched a crowd of folk batter. skelp and twat each other. and i wasn‘t on Lothian Road. In this tough and ceaselessly brutal affray. Teatr Modjcska turns Shakespearean Rome into Polish radge. as sticks. burning torches and swords are used in a near-incessant rammy of a production. Even the audience, milling about in the site- specific location of Old College Quad were given a good shove if they got in the way of
actors. as they sprinted among them.
But it never became wearing. Jacek Glomb‘s production turns the patrician general of the title into a tribal warlord. whose conflicts with his own people and the attempted invaders of Rome are dealt with in similar style. with a short sharp shock. Darek Maj leads as the hard little bastard of the title. whose only weakness is his Ma Baker of a mum (Anita Poddebniak) who brings him to calamity with friend and foe alike. This is a thrilling and fast paced production. with a pounding live score from the underground Polish band Komtorany. But it is mainly spoken in Polish. without surtitles. so you'll need to either know the play well. or read the programme closely. to follow the action. (Steve Cramcr)
