Resolution 0. xlsxetnlrlv Rooms. until 27xlug. 5.25pm. Susan was eighteen when she was hit by a drunk driver and killed. Her father can‘t get over her death. but neither can her killer. Written and performed by I’ip l'tton. lv’exolution centres on the lives of these two men after Susan's death. In presenting both of them. some balance is intended. but given the amount of titne devoted to the feelings of the bereaved dad. this is not fully realised. Subsequently. at times. this production feels like a campaign for the victims of crime. The guilt-ridden driver is the more interesting of the two characters and l'tton is more successful in portraying his quiet resignation than the cliche spouting. ranting father. (Viv I’ran/mannt

Sakura - Bandit Princess om Kati Kurmla. Assembly Rooms. until 27 Aug. [2.55pm. ‘The llth century was a time of turmoil’ says Sakura's narrator. and thus begins a plot featuring a bandit princess of qttestionable parentage. her loyal retainer. a sadistic prince and a fair bit of cross dressing and murder set against the backdrop of feudal Japan. It all reminds you ofjust how close the classical epic is to its Hollywood counterpart. Then again. a Hollywood film would be sure to airbrush the arnorality out of this compelling tale. and lessen the impact of its bare. unadomed action. Cinema epics. too. are rarely brought to life by a single actress. Kati Kuroda. aided by a mute maid and an impressive flutist. has a great weight on her shoulders. but moves with an understated. kinetic grace that captures the nuances of the various characters in a manner that makes them seem instantly familiar.

Sakura lives her early years in isolation with her bodyguard Genta. before being groomed for high society. Then. dressed as a man. she is ordered to execute a rival warlord. and keeps up her disguise until her past catches up with her. Her narrative moves at a somewhat uneven pace. but the terrific intensity with which it is played out is captivating. (James Stuart)
