I Princes Street Gardens is a den of iniquity and they let children in there! French kids show Vo/pino features puppets kissing ‘continental style’. passing around marijuana ‘joints’ and handling a substance that looks like cocaine. according to some of the adults attending the show with their children. Furthermore. Russians have been seen selling vodka to innocent people strolling in the Gardens. and the Garage Chapiteau. newly erected in the area. is run by none other than Shakti. the notorious and beguiling performer of erotic cabaret. ANGELO BADALAMENTI, David Lynch’s right hand man (Film Festival, UGC, 17 Aug, 6.30pm), picks five favourite scores of his own.

1 The Comfort of Strangers The film offered the opportunity to compose music in two diverse styles - operatic and Turco— Arabesque and to tie such different worlds together musically.

2 The City Of Lost Children I loved composing basically continental-style themes. but turning and twisting them in a beautiful. dark. off-centre world.

editors of the tabloid rags collectively yelling: ‘Hold the fucking front page!‘ Insider intends to investigate further. after office hours.

I Rumour has it Philip Seymour Hoffman's in town. Hoffman who? Hoffman. the leading character actor of his generation. You may have seen his superb impersonation of legendary rock journo Lester Bangs in Almost Famous. Or perhaps you caught his gorgeously smug cameo as Jude Law's pal in The Talented Mr Ripley. And if you haven't yet seen Boogie Nights. see it for his wonderfully nerdy turn as assistant to Mark Wahlberg's porn star. Not that you‘ll see the Hoffster on the big screen. instead he's directing Jesus Hopped The A Train.

I Belle And Sebastian are not the only indie pop stars with a film (Storytelling) in the Festival. The Divine Comedy will screen Regeneration A Visual Record.

I There's so much audience participation that goes on during the Festival. Insider is compelled to nominate what happened during Puppetry Of The Penis a few nights back for the Most Embarrassing Participation Moment Award. Having unslung their tackle and completed a series of thoroughly painful-looking dick tricks. the two Aussie performances attempted to usher on stage a young lady from the front row. Her impressively swift reaction was to run the length of the hall and linger at the exit . . . where in full view of the entire audience she fell down a flight of steps. Insider can't help thinking her move was the right one another woman was plucked from the audience to help

I And in a thematically-related incident. the dedication of Fringe punters proved itself early this year when. at Craig Hill's first show at the Gilded Balloon. an eager and late punter rushed so as not to miss the start. tripped. fell and broke her ankle. She then insisted on postponing her trip to A&E. And so with stretcher bearers and a large bag of ice she was carried into Craig Hill's Wiz To Oz.

That's the same Miles Jupp who plays a randy vicar in The Stand‘s theatre show Three Fc t Ladies. And we thought The Stand was against competition?
