O... Fi/mhouse, 9pm. The Lin Chou-Chou in question is a fictitious (and unseen) pop singer, whose ethereal music provides both sanctuary and inspiration to her devoted cyber- fans. One of her most ardent internet admirers is the teenager Huichi (Hayato Ichihara) who runs the 'Lilyphilia' web site. but who also endures sadistic bullying at school from a former friend Hoshino (Shugo Oshinari). An epic paen to alienated Japanese youth from director Shunji lwai. which oscillates between rapture and sorrow. its radiant digital video cinematography and a rapturous Debussy-based soundtrack transcend any narrative incoherencies. COMEDY DRAMA ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE MIDLANDS

Shane Meadows completes his Nottingham trilogy O...

The action starts with Dek (Rhys lfans) proposing to Shirley (Shirley Henderson) on Vanessa, except that there is not the usual happy chat show result as she turns him down. Everyone seems to have seen Dek’s TV humiliation, including Shirley’s ex, Jimmy (Robert Carlyle), who is also the foster brother of Shirley’s neighbour Carol (Kathy Burke). Jimmy sees this as the opportunity to win his old girlfriend back, and leaves Glasgow with money from a botched robbery, fleeing to Nottingham and the new life he feels he deserves.

Meadows’ film is a Western parody, essentially the auteur from Snenton is just having fun.

Cameo, 7pm. An impressive balancing act between the personal and the political. Leonard Retel Helmrich‘s film looks closely at family life in Indonesia. This is. after all. a c0untry known for the corruption of its politics and yet Helmrich‘s film IS good on working from the personal out. In one scene we see just how political abuse can seem like manna from heaven: when some free food is dropped off in return for a rigged vote. the argument between family members can seem less clear- cut than an external political perspective would suggest. The mum thinks of the practicality of the food: another family member 'idealistically‘ of the political manipulation. (Tony McKibbin)

I Rabbit Proof Fence ODD. Dominion, 7pm. Phillip (Patriot Games. Dead Ca/m) Noyce returns to his roots to tell this true story from a shameful period in Australian history: the ‘Stolen Generation‘, when ‘half-caste' aboriginal children were forcibly resettled with white families. to have the aboriginal ‘bred out' of them and future generations. Three such young girls escape. and return to their mother. on foot. 1500 miles. following the fence of the title. A remarkable story illuminated by astonishing performances from the three leads. and a perfect turn from Kenneth Branagh. bringing a complex humanity to the Chief Protector of Aborigines; a man who honestly believes he is doing the right thing. A genuinely moving, poignant. beautiful film. (Rod White) Take Care of My Cat UGC, 7pm. Five girls find their friendship put to the test after they leave school in this likeable. lightweight KOrean film.

I Fate .0... Filmhouse, 8pm. On the basis of Confession and Fate what fascinates Turkish director Zeki Demirkubuz isn't social responsibility but a sense of personal culpability. And yet though Camus's The Outsider supplies the basic structure for the film. with Musa failing to mourn his mother's death and finding himself up on a murder charge. there's the suggestion that Demirkubuz wants to illustrate that within one's self maybe a scul peaks through. The film‘s existential themes are impressively explored. but it's the closing lines that indicate Demirkubuz has found his own very fresh perspective somewhere between Camus and social expectation. With dreams of becoming the next Rob Van Dam (WWF‘s prize fighter). kids in backyards across America and most worrying.
