ORWELL

You wouldn’t exactly call them catchphrases, but old Eric Blair managed to knock up a few neat concepts that have stayed deep within the western psyche. And gave TV producers a bad idea or two.

I Newspeak The phrases dreamed up by politicians to help the public understand that the state knows best. See 'weapons of mass destruction' for details.

I Doublethink This was deemed to be ‘the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one‘s mind simultaneously. and accepting both of them.‘ See ‘modern British politics‘ for details. I Big Brother In 7984, it was a sinister all-seeing eye (yet with a heavy moustache) not unlike CCTV. These days. it's an annual telly non-event voiced by a GeOrdie and fronted by a permanently pregnant wailing woman.

I Room 101 In 1984. it was a torture chamber in which a prisoner was subjected to his or her deepest fear. These days. it's a duff telly show where over- exposed celebs get to bang on about the things that really irritate them.

I A nice cup of tea When he wasn't worrying ab0ut the potential for tyranny in the UK. Orwell tossed and turned at night about making the perfect brew. Apparently, he concluded that strong Ceylonese tea (no sugar. milky but not creamy) from a warmed pot did the trick.

See listings for Orwell events.
