NICK REVELL Intellectual and political. just not all that funny 00
Nick Revell's comedy is of the gentle sort. as the reasonably charismatic and friendly stand-up saunters through a set With a distinct political bent. raising a few smiles. but ultimately tailing to ignite much in the way of genurne mirth. A distinct air of the intellectual hangs over this show. and while Revell's long set- piece stories about his childhood or current life in London might be reasonably diverting they're hardly worth writing home about. By no means a bad comedian, Revell does. however. struggle somewhat With sub- standard observational material. making his Bare Bones a passable hour, but hardly inspirational.

As a timeout from the sometimes overwrought intellectuality that reigns in modern comedy. acts that spring from traditions IIkC slapstick and the muse hall have their place. Not that Michael Santos' psychic cabaret IS particularly straighttowvard — dramatis personae include neurotic bears. angels With trumpets and the world's worst audience plant — but it has an appealing and refreshing innocence. Sadly. though, the concept IS somewhat stronger than the execution. There are many clever, original and tItIIIating Ideas In Mindbender. the sum of which falls just short of termrng a cohesive whole. The show has potential. and wrth a bit of polish it may well gleam. But then. being a psychic. Santos probably already knows that. (Sam Healy)

Chaotic delivery. but half-baked ideas 0..
There's a five-star show cowering somewhere wrthin Andrew Bailey's chaotic. multimedia divertissement. struggling to break tree. Employing a plethora of found objects. puppet characters and ad hoc instruments. the performer ventures to Create a string of surreally funny musical sketch routines which includes a chorus of plastic crocodiles backed up by crows. and an Improwsed techno night. Some of this is actually pretty amusing, mainly because of the sheer ropiness of the show and Bailey's deeply inept delivery. Eventually. though. the lack of technical slickness and general half-baked nature of the ideas begin to irritate. Must try harder. (Allan Radcliffe)
