SHAKESPEARE’S ITALIAN J03 0000

The cult preservation society

You can‘t go past a bit of good old populist entertainment on the Fringe. and Malachi Bogdanov‘s production mixes all the usual ingredients well. Combining the eponymous cult film with a crowd of Shakespeare‘s characters and a gaggle of his ‘greatest hit‘ speeches is a clever idea, craftily carried out. It‘s not any more radical than the traditional Shakespeare parody, in which Lady Macbeth cries ‘Out damn‘d spot‘. and the dog leaves the stage. but it doesn‘t have to be. An up-for-it. youngish audience are brought in to a succession of 60s pop hits (none of them British. sadly. given the film) and the retro-chic fairly zips off the stage from that point on. Will Charlie (the . .. only character retaining his name from the film) develop his relationship with Juliet? In this version of -- z " -' events. she‘s Shylock's daughter. Will Falstaff hold his courage at the heist? You don‘t need me to tell you. This production contains as many daft-as-a-brush moments as you‘ll ever need to see, with a comic rendition of the Carpenters song. ‘Close To You‘, a highlight. Three full size Mini Coopers on stage are also well used. though whether they take up so much of the stage that they impede the action is a I ' point to consider. For all that, it‘s a grand and unpretentious evening‘s entertainment. (Steve Cramer) Ir; 1"}.‘1'4. 1.. » , " ' .' It, i; :' ¢ " ,- o,-'
