Finding heavenly comedy in the confines of hell .0...
Sick, surreal and set in hell, DIE is one of the most original snows you‘ll see at this year's festival. Much more than comedy. DIE is !ike a living and breathing cartoon. Its sharp. witty script is accentuated by a striking set, along with very stylised costumes and puppets. making DIE visually dynamic.
The show itself is a sardonic take on American trial by television, with the destiny of Deathrow Jethro decided by an audience vote. Once condemned. you discover Jethro‘s trailer trash hell, which led to him to murder his fat, flatulent mother and receive the death sentence.
Hell itself has been taken over by the DIE Corporation: they decide whether Jethro will get sent back to earth or face a future of torture. Outside the main storyline of Jethro‘s Jerry Springer-esque life. there‘s lots more going on with the general administration of the DIE Corporation and its internal politics of death. You‘re introduced to some of hell's grotesque. mutated residents, including Elephant Man Elvis, LiberArnie, DaliParton and Frankenstinatra and the Rot Pack. The celebrity parodies are absolutely hilarious: there's almost an element of Spitting Image to it; particularly the piss-take of the international cartoonist, who can't be named for legal reasons because he has a lot in common with Hitler. Produced by Brand X, the performance of Sarah Nield. Paul Garner and Matty Mitford is extremely slick and impressive. This show is truly is the undiscovered gem of the festival — death has never been so amusing. (Carolyn Rae)
