PICASSO AND DANCE

Art attack on the dance floor

Serge Diaghilev‘s Ballet Russes was possibly the most influential ballet company of the 20th century. During its short existence (1909-1929) its roll call of dancers included Nijinsky, Pavlova. Balanchine and Rambert, many of whom choreographed for the company as well. Diaghilev's musical collaborations were equally impressive. Stravinsky, Satie. Prokofiev all worked for him as did a number of prestigious artists and designers. These included Matisse, Miro and, of course. Pablo Picasso, who created sets and costumes for some of the company's most successful ballets. Now, Bordeaux Opera Ballet is attempting to capture the buzz surrounding that heady period, with performances of Parade, the Three Cornered Hat and Icarus (all designed by Picasso), plus Rouault's The Prodigal Son.

I Edinburgh Playhouse, 473 2000. 21 -23 Aug. 7.30pm (Sat mat 2pm). 27-237.
