The ladies have it

ASH Catchy. poppy. punky, spunky. sexy. rocky genius

Playing to hundreds of thousands of people at Knebworth and having a number one album that spawned five hit singles. This is not a bad time for Ash, considering they were a few grand away from bankruptcy before their last record came out.

Blame fame. After bursting onto our airwaves while still teenagers with the insatiable poppy punk of ‘Girl From Mars‘. 'Kung Fu‘ and the likes. the Northern Irish kids imploded.

‘We were freaked out by the whole thing.‘ says chirpy sexgod singer Tim Wheeler. ‘Looking back. I guess we were pretty burnt out.‘

The result was the distinctly non-chart friendly Nu-clear Sounds, a record that defied anyone to sing along. But. like Rocky in Rockys I-IV. Ash always bounce back. and with their 2001 album. Free All Angels, they excelled themselves. producing a record so shiny it was positively blinding. yet a record that had the biggest rock cojones around.

The newly rejuvenated band have spent the last year breaking America. supporting Robbie Williams at the biggest rock gigs in this country ever. and just generally acting as if being a rock star is the best fucking job in the world. Which it is. And live? They kick unbelievable rock ass.

‘With all the touring we‘ve done in the last couple of years. we‘re definitely playing the best we‘ve ever played,‘ says a confident Wheeler. Last time they played the Corn Exchange. Ash nearly blew the roof off.

‘It should be even better this time.‘ says Wheeler. You heard the man. (Doug Johnstone) I or"! n
