Cait Davis: superb

Maybe you shouldn't see it. It depends on how you're feeling. So powerful and moving is Gridiron‘s latest production that if you are in a slightly emotionally labile state, it might be a bit overpowering. Ben Harrison directs a tale which has some resonances with Roman Polanski's film. Repulsion in its focus on a woman alone in the house, confronting eerie delusions brought about by emotional disruption. In this site~specific piece we're brought through various rooms of a Georgian house. confronting the memories of lost love of a painter plagued by the ghosts associated with a former lover who lacked the strength to stay the course. This devised exploration of the pure, prerational impulse of love, its inexplicability and absoluteness, is set off nicely by the music of composer performer David Paul Jones, whose surreal reinterpretation of that great song of lost love, ‘They Can't Take That Away From Me’ is a treat. So too is the performance of Cait Davis, but no surprises there, for this performer seems incapable of anything less than superb. The sequence in which a garden is created in a bed, and she awaits her absent lover, with a bowl of strawberries for comfort, bites the heart out of you and spits it back into your tear-filled eyes. Dick Bird‘s design sets the atmosphere of both love and psychological disturbance nicely, and is ingeniously lit by George Tarbuck. Just don‘t go
