EXILE AND DJ ROSCOE Underbelly, Edinburgh, Sat 16 Aug Most DJs visiting Edinburgh over the festival see about as much of the Fringe as they do of the Golden Gate Bridge. But Tim Shaw has been to three out of the last four festivals, mostly working as a sound engineer.

Shaw. aka Exile, is equally unusual in the way he performs - with a piece of software called Reaktor. ‘You can actually make your own instruments on Reaktor,‘ he explains. ‘I haven‘t heard of anyone else using it. Imagine doing a live drum & bass remix of Squarepusher and you're almost there. It looks like a performance, too. I‘m working faders, pressing buttons and generally leaping about.‘

This will be Shaw’s first live gig. But he should be ready for it, he's released tracks on Moving Shadow. Frequency and Renegade Hardware. and has an MA in electro-acoustic sound. The tunes range from soulful groovers through dark, twitching dancefloor numbers to chaotic, esoteric creations. It shouldn‘t get too conceptual, though. ‘Music is there to entertain you. and people who come to a nightclub expect to do some dancing.’ he says. ‘I do get a macabre enjoyment out of confusing people, but when I go out it's tracks like that that actually get me dancing. I like to entertain and I like to be contentious every now and again too.‘ (James Smart)
