In this age of pile ‘em high, sell ‘em by the truckload interior design, is there anything more tiresome than getting jolly excited about showing your soon to be fawning friends a newly purchased lamp/sofa/table, only to hear the response, ‘Oh, I've got that’? Fear not, style fiends. Thanks to Funk Fair, Scotland’s first 20th/21st century design fair, you can buy the originals that today’s designers rip off something rotten and be sure that everyone and their dog won't have anything as astronomically cool.

Dealers including Bachelor Pad, Godiva and Retrobilia present a veritable

Who’s Who of design. Swoon at Eames and Panton, salivate at Murano and get

a bit over-excited, to say the least, about Le Corbusier. As well as the big daddies of design, there is plenty of ceramics, furniture and lighting to suit

every retro lover’s budget, plus a range of computer game systems from a time

when Lara Croft was still in nappies. If your house is already stocked up with delectable design treats and you just can't find an excuse to buy that 19705 Rocket Lamp, then turn your attention to the selection of vintage clothing downstairs. Prom dresses from the 505, 605 mini-dresses and delicate vintage bags - it‘s enough to bring a tear to the eye.

Organisers Mel Jarron and Robert Williams have tapped into a sparkly world of design-daft folks. ‘Unlike Victoriana or pre-Victoriana, modern designs suit

the lifestyle of an increasing number of people. They can decorate their homes

with items that look great, but will also appreciate in value.‘ What’s Mel’s hot tip? ‘Look out for 805 design, which is still not well publicised. People should go with their instincts; you have to like an object to truly appreciate it’.

If you fancy coming over all Margot and Jerry, there’s a fully stocked bar to furnish you with a G&T. Or if you feel your energy levels drop, head over to the tuck shop for as many flying saucers and sherbet dabs as your insulin levels

can handle. Then, channel that sugar-buzz and post-purchase glee into a bit of

gentle swaying to the sounds of the Departure Lounge DJs; blending jazz and hip hop with a wee touch of Latin. Has shopping ever been so civilised?
