MAGIC FEET

Hungary for more

John Rae's Jazz Festival outing with a sextet comprising three Scots and three American musicians under the Afro-Celt Jazz Ensemble banner may have been a tongue-in-cheek nod to Gaelic music's influence across the Atlantic. complete wrth his mock Gaelic translations of tune titles. but Rae’s commitment to bringing together jaz7 and Scottish music has been long-standing and genuine.

His Celtic Feet band has been the most successful manifestation of it. and they settle in for a three-night residency which will add the potent strains of Hungarian music to the mix.

The Magic Feet band first got together on a Tune Up t0ur last year. and feature Mrshi and Hobi Farkas alongside Rae on drums. Erlidh Shaw on fiddle. Martin Green on accordion. Brian Kellock on piano. Mario Caribe on bass and Neil Gerstenberg.

Edinburgh-born but resident in France.

on saxophone.

‘We'll be picking up where we left off with Mishi and Robi last year. and we'll be looking to introduce some more of their Hungarian material into it.‘ says Rae. ‘We're doing this one ourselves. so if we don't get decent audiences. I'll have to sell a couple of my kids.’ (Kenny Mathieson)

TIPPETT CENTENARY CONCERT - DUNEDIN CONSORT AND MR MCFALL’S CHAMBER All star tribute to Tippett

One of the most important composers of the 20th century. Sir Michael Tippett. can be heard far and wide this year in celebration of the centenary of his birth. Surprismgly, not a note of it will spring from the Edinburgh International Festival's programme. but the Fringe is the proud bearer of the first Scottish performance of his chamber cantata C/‘OW/i of the Year. Teaming up the impressive Dunedin Consort with the endlessly versatile Mr McFall's Chamber results in a concert

featuring some of Tippett's finest choral and chamber rnusrc. The striking and probably most familiar sounds of the Negro spiritual arrangements from the pacifist oratorio A Child of Our Time are performed alongside less well knot-4n madrigals and rnotets. and the second string quartet.

A humanitarian of great cornpassron. Tippett also provides inspiration for a specially commissioned new piece from Glasgo\.‘.'-baserl composer William Sweeney. Pro Patna is a setting of ltSth century texts by the Scottish humanist George Buchanan. who. like Tippett. continues to have direct relevance to modern lives. lCarol Marni I St Mary 's Episcopal Cathedral. 220 0000, l8Aug. 7.30mi), 5‘70 rf‘éa‘r.

EMILIANA TORRINI Italian-Icelandic whispering folky songwriting genius Emiliana Torrinr is half ltalran. half Icelandic. and her music somehow reflects that. combining a sultry Mediterranean passion with an idiosyncratic. icy \.'-.«'errdness that only lcelanders seem to possess. Her second album. Fisherman's ll/orna/r. is a thing of gentle ‘.‘.’()li(i(}f'. a collection of stripped down acoustic songs which short/cases Torr‘inr's ama/ing. fragile voice to perfection. The record is a long way from her 1000 debut. Love in the Time of Science. ‘.'.'f‘rf(ii‘. was an electro trippy pop thing that fitted into the trip hop mould of Portrshead or Goldfr'app.

Since that record Torrini has been busy. penning and performing a track on the Lord of the Rings soundtrack
