I Comedian and novelist Mark Watson has written a pilot for a sitcom, to be broadcast on BBC Three this Autumn. While Watson stages one show this year in which the audience helps him write a novel his sitcom. And Martin, is the story of - guess what? - a struggling would-be novelist who moves in with his high-achieving brother, then begins to receive interest from publishers.

I One of the greatest dilemmas of Edinburgh in August is sorting out the cultural wheat from the chaff. A new website has been set up with the aim of soothing this quandary. www.festivalpreviews.com was created by Napier University graduate Liz Maclntosh, and provides a searchable database of acts in the form of video clips

I A number of Festival venues and performers are huffing and puffing about the effects of the blanket smoking ban on the integrity of their productions. Mel Smth has said he thinks it’s reasonable to light up a cigar for his portrayal of Churchill in Allegiance at the Assembly Rooms. Meanwhile, the Hill Street Theatre has already been threatened with the withdrawal of its licence, a consequence of Artistic Director Tomek Borkowy‘s much- publicised open letter to Scottish Parliamentarians, threatening to defy the ban - a clear signal that Edinburgh City Council intend to crack down heavily on those intending to break the law.

SAVE ST PETERS

List campaign heats up with Festival exhibition

The protest at the decay of Scotland’s finest modern building. is given a new voice in an exhibition of art and ideas inspired by lsi Metzstein and Andy MacMillan‘s seminal structure in Cardross.

The exhibition, staged at Edinburgh’s venerable Scottish Arts Club, consists of work by artists including Toby Paterson, as well as a film of Cardross by Murray Grigor, shot when it was operational in 1972. In addition to artistic responses, the show includes proposals for a working future for the building.

The row over the Cardross seminary has raged since The List launched its campaign at the end of April. Despite a Grade ‘A’ listing by Historic Scotland in 1992, St Peter’s has fallen into an increasingly poor condition. Its owners, the Archdiocese of Scotland, have submitted a planning application to ‘stabilise’ the building as a ruin in its woodland setting, but to sell the land around it for housing.

Historic Scotland has commented, in documents released under the Freedom of Information act, that the proposal by the Archdiocese are not in the best interests of securing a future for the building. As a result, the planning application has stalled. Meanwhile. the building continues to decay.

The List's campaign to save St Peter’s has been endorsed by hundreds of people working in the cultural sector in Scotland and beyond.

The exhibition is co-organised by The List and the St Peter’s Building Preservation Trust.
