TUNDRA

Dfrnt Trouble at Cabaret Voltaire, Edinburgh. Fri 4 Aug

How to pigeonhole London bleep-pop cut-up maestro Max Tundra? You just can't is the simple answer. With a recording career which encompasses Warp, TigerbeatG and Domino (he's currently recording the follow-up to 2000‘s Some Best Friend You Turned Out To Be and 2002's Mastered By Guy at the Exchange for the label), his songs have a weird, compulsive arcade game soundtrack quality, with occasional flights into

freeform jazz.

‘What influences me?‘ he asks. ‘Not music, necessarily. If I'm having a shit day I might write something melancholy, or something nice to cheer me up. But I’m certainly more productive when I'm in a happy house.‘

Rather beautifully, Tundra exercises this happy fetish with a recording process which centres on his old Commodore Amiga and an ancient Akai sampler. ‘From my time in rock bands‘, he says, ‘I've vowed never to work with musicians again. It’s a bit extreme, but I learned to play all the instruments myself. I suppose it’s like a novelist using an old mechanical typewriter instead of a laptop. I just don’t want to get caught in the trap of trying to keep up with the most up-to-date PC programs. And besides, my Amiga software only cost me a pound.’ (David Pollock)
