If there is an intellectual agenda to be found in Mueck's work then it rests somewhere between the Chinese proverb - ‘if you don‘t scale the mountain. you can't view the plain‘ and Jim Henson's oft repeated belief that ‘People love going along with the idea of a beautiful pig.‘ A Henson acolyte himself. Mueck‘s fantastical experiments in physiognomic representation spring from the same combination of Dadaism, industrial tool know how and stubbornness which has driven artists as diverse as Barbara Hepworth and Duane Hanson.

Mueck‘s fascinations lie in evasion and the cankered possibilities of pretend flesh, and nothing highlights this better than the two most impressive works here - Man in a Boat (2002) and Wild Man (2005). The former is of a tiny, distracted. putrid skinned naked man whose undressed bum cheeks are spreading over the crossboard of a decrepit old rowing boat. The latter. more recent piece is a massive medieval looking savage (looking like a leftover prop from Tim Burton’s Big Fish). In both pieces the flesh is pale and the proportions are ridiculous. Yet. placed in rooms to themselves. both these pieces work brilliantly simply because their gradations are untenable, so the opaque scenarios that these works suggest (lonely and lost and naked madness respectively) are complete.

The almost too familiar work Ghost (1998) (giant gawky teenage girl) shares the centre space with the humungous In Bed (2006) (woman stares into space from her bed), but neither is as impressive as this year's Girl (huge. placenta- spattered new born baby) - an affecting and defiantly repellent slice of Grand Guignol. With the exception of the lovely Spooning Couple (2005), everything else here is either inconsequential or research periphera (mainly photos of Mueck's studio), which, with their endless details of dismembered fibreglass body parts, underline Mueck‘s place as the Dr Moreau of modern art.
