TONY BENN PUBLIC MEETING David Hume Tower. George Square. Edinburgh. Tue 15 Aug.

Tony Benn. President of the Stop the War Coalition is heading to Edinburgh to speak on the crisis in the Middle East. In 2001, 50 years after first being elected. Benn ‘retired‘ as a Member of Parliament. Famously he noted that no longer being an MP would allow him to ‘devote more time to politics‘. He has certainly done that with a vengeance. At 81 his energy and commitment are undimmed. He was a central figure in the mobilisations that led to Britain‘s largest ever demonstration on February 15 2003. In 2004 he became the first President of the Stop the War Coalition, a post he still holds today. Before the war in Iraq, and subsequently, as the horror of occupation has emerged, he has spoken on anti-war platforms up and down the country. There have been consistent themes in the message that he has taken to huge audiences. First, the threat of US policies on a world scale. While others ignored the issue, Benn was clear that sanctions and the deadly poison of depleted uranium had killed more than a million Iraqis since the end of the first Gulf War. He has also consistently stressed that war in the Middle East affects us all. Second, critically, is his call for a mass movement against war. In February 2002 he said, ‘I am not interested in a Labour party revolt. I am interested in a mass movement. I believe every government has to listen to the people in the end. The Prime Minister‘s contempt for Parliament is fundamentally undemocratic.‘ His understanding of the role

of ordinary people in changing the world has inspired thousands to join the movement. Finally, there‘s his understanding of imperialism: ‘l was born in an empire the British Empire. The biggest empire in the history of the world is the American empire with weapons that could destroy any country and seems ready to use them for oil and power, but, like the British Empire, it will end.‘ Come and be inspired.
