Upsala Circus, St Petersburg’s legendary youth circus group, make their Fringe debut with a show centred around the unpredictable movements of the ping-pong ball. Founded 17 years ago, Upsala Circus regularly practice with more than 80 young people, and their circus tent in St Petersburg hosts over 15,000 visitors a year. The Ping-Pong Ball Effect is a high- energy fusion of circus skills, modern dance and clowning, with live music and an immersive soundscape. Throughout the performance, a fantastical world emerges, piercing a monochrome cityscape with bold dashes of colour and poetry. Cirque Éloize have been celebrated across the world. Cirkopolis has travelled to over 30 countries, and in 2014 was the New York Drama Desk Award Winner for Unique Theatrical Experience.

Go behind the l awless smiles and perfect execution of the traditional circus and see the wobbles, the pain, and the real cost of aiming for perfection. This boundary-pushing show is created by Ellie Dubois, whose previous work at Summerhall, Ringside, was

nominated for a Total Theatre Award for Circus in 2015, and was the winner of the Autopsy Award for experimental performance from The Arches and Summerhall 2014/15.

ZOO BATACCHIO Cirk La Putyka ZOO Southside, Sat 5–Sat 12 Aug, 6.30pm, £14 (£12). Preview Fri 4 Aug, £9. Part of Czech Showcase, 2017. Award- winning contemporary circus company Cirk La Putyka mixes breathtaking acrobatics, original music, magic tricks and unexpected illusions in a fantastical journey to the spectacular comedies of the 19th century. Expect a captivating fusion of styles, as Batacchio combines circus, dance and theatre with ventriloquism and stage magic. This will be Batacchio’s UK debut, but Cirk La Putyka’s third Edinburgh appearance following sell- out seasons in 2011 (with the Total Theatre Award-nominated La Putyka) and 2015 (Dolls).
