widowed mother, under the impression that he is staying at a boarding house, unexpectedly comes to visit. Makk is one of Hungary’s most respected directors, a reputation made by such works as Another Way, a courageous story of sexual and political nonconformism. This however is one of his lesser works, falling somewhere between bawdy farce and faded lyricism it seems merely an attractive piece of escapism. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.
o A View to a Kill (PG) (John Glen. UK, 1985) Roger Moore, Christopher Walken, Grace Jones. 131 mins. Jolly Roger’s farewell to Bondage as he combats another megalomaniac determined to rule the world. Grace Jones is wasted, Christopher Walken offers the most colourless villainy whilst Moore huffs and puffs his way towards another fat pay cheque. The stunt team are excellent and certainly earn their bacon sandwiches but this is a tired, hand-me-down Bond failing to keep up with the Joneses (Indiana, of course). Edinburgh: Playhouse.
0 Witness (15) (Peter Weir, US. 1985) Harrison Ford, Kelly McGilIis, Alexander Godunov. 112 mins. A young Amish boy is a witness to a murder. The investigation leads a cop into a brush with another culture, a little romance and the expected police corruption.
Atmospheric, impeccably acted and beautifully constructed. One of the year’s best films. Edinburgh: Dominion.
