Three of Scotland’s foremost professional opera singers get together for An Evening of Opera. Momingside, 228 1155 (Usher Hall). 7.30pm. £2 (£4 inc wine and cheese). The publicity officer of the SCO turns impressario for this concert in aid of the Christchurch Organ Fund. Fergus Black conducts a specially formed choir of Edinburgh’s leading singers including the tenor John Cox, shortly to leave the city for Keele, who will sing Finzi’s rarely performed Dies Natalis. The choir, with orchestra, performs Handel’s rousing Zadok the Priest and the Mass by Stravinsky. Chris Bell lets us hear the present state of the organ in Handel’s Organ Concerto Op 7 No 4.

Elspeth Mack (soprano) and Neil Morrison (lutes) hold the secret of exactly what’s on in this concert, but just to be going on with for the moment you can hear ‘airs de coeur’, Scottish lute songs and music for lutes alone.

Leonard Friedman, more often to be found directing the Scottish Ensemble, faces a change of players and takes the Academy Chamber Orchestra through their paces in a programme of Haydn, Britten, Lennox Berker and Mozart’s G minor Symphony No 40. o Strathclyde University Chamber Orchestra Concert Assembly Hall , Strathclyde University, 552 4400 ext 3444. 8pm. Free at door. The last concert at Strathclyde University before all the Christmas music events takes the form of a ‘promenade’ concert, during which refreshments will be served. It also provides a showcase for the orchestra’s best wind players in

Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante in E flat for oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon with orchestra. Alan Tavener directs the programme , which also includes Schubert’s Symphony No 6.

Horizons by Cartwright and Concerto for Oboe, Clarinet and Chamber Orchestra by Christopher James are the specially written works. The latter is conducted by the composer and Robert Marshall conducts the rest of the evening’s proceedings.

PIANO FORTE

Brazilian pianist Christina Ortiz perionns Mendelssohn’s First Piano Concerto with the sun both in Edinburgh (22 Nov) and Glasgow (23 Nov). An internationally acclaimed artist, she has played with many at the world’s great orchestras including the Vienna Philharmonic, Concertgebow, Chicago Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic. It is rumoured that clarinettist Dick Lee will be putting in an appearance and generally the word to Edinburgh blues musicians is— Come out of the closet, with or without your instrument. High hopes that this will become a regular blues venue.
