The end oI November (see Listings Fri 29 Nov) begins the main curling event of the year held at Murraylield Ice Rink. This is the 11th Edinburgh lniemational Curling Championships and has iound new sponsorship irom Weatherseal Double Glazing and The Scotsman. The sponsor’s money has gone to providing Scottish curlers with the best opposition in the world, but at the same time allowing the young up-and-coming rinks to compete against the top rinks.
16 rinks will take part. 4 world class rinks are invited irom overseas, 10 top Scottish rinks will compete and 2 qualitiers irom the international Play-Oils held in Edinburgh. Celebrities irom abroad include Paul Gowsell (Canada), lormer world junior champion who will skip the Canadian
Peter Wilson's Stranraer, 1st Prize winners at Ayr- in the opening. Both have held the world iuniortitle at one time and although Paul Gowsell lost to a Scottish team skipped by Bob Kelly belore achieving the title, it will be

Certainly he is in with a good chance given the standard of his team.
Other world class overseas champions competing come irom Denmark, Italy and the USA and this should otter the Scots a gruelling challenge. Gordon Muirhead’s Kinross are expected to do well as are David Altken’s Murrayiield team. It is unlortunaie that Graeme Adam, three times title holder at this event, is unable to compete. So much depends on the perlormance on the day that it is hard to predict the outcome at this Intematlonal. The good news for such events is that Murrayiield are thinking seriously about improving the ice conditions at the rink, which at present needs considerable attention. Pictured above are the runners-up lrom last year's International. With Graeme Adam not delending theirtitle and Mike Hay's Perth team also unable to compete, it will be interesting to see who will take the coveted No 1 spot.
