A' :Q- This exhibition, which caused quite a stir when tirst shown in Stirling this summer, supports the argument that large scale, energetic tlgurative painting now dominates the Scottish

, art scene. The judges were Jacki Parry, E the Glasgow artist, lan McKenzie Smith

oi the Aberdeen gallery and the , Guardian art critic, Waldemar Januszczak, who said that lower

a exhibits were chosen this year because

ot the vast canvasses and massive sculptures submitted.

One at the artists leatured, Donald Urquhart, ielt there would be low bidders tor his powertul trlptych ‘Sulcide on Straatmanstraat’ (to check), with its harsh colour scheme

and vicious looking herons. ‘I painted it in Amsterdam when i couldn’t cope with all the canals, junkies and pornography.’ Lys Hansen's garish ‘Stage Fright’, which was awarded the second prize, makes the proverbial butterflies in the stomach seem like huge moths, and Kirsty McGhie’s gigantic sharp teeth and raw gums sculpture, ‘A Touchy Subject’, is hardly more soothing. Some works, however, rellect a light-hearted, gentler approach, such as Adrian Wiszniewskl’s harvesticeiebration, ‘Brtnging in the Com' or Craig Peacock’s study at tish and pink toes, with the none-too-sertous tltie “Don't Go in the Water'.
