medallist in Canada, Charles Murray lrom Prestonpans in the 82 kilo class and the Cunningham brothers trom Kilmarnock; Norrie (67 kilo) and Graham (60 kilo). With the Commonwealth Games this year, all the entrants will be especially keen to

which will be coached by Jack Hynd, himself a Scottish Open winner and managed by Ian Thomson. The two most interesting entrants must be the 50 year-old John McNiven and his son, also named John. John senior is a Scottish and British Champion as well as the reigning World Masters Weightlifting Champion. He trains six days a week and is aiming to take part in his sixth Commonwealth Games in succession which team manager Thomson says: ‘is something of a record'. His son John is also very much in contention tor a place in the team although to save contusion he lifts at 67% kilos to his father's 56. The championship starts at noon and will continue until 5 or 6pm. At the time of going to press, admission price had not been fixed, but is likely to be under a pound it not tree. (Graham Caldwell)
