BANG! 9.58pm, Saturday 24: Alan Hillary checks his watch, ensures his portflres (fancy matches) are dry and glances over 3,000 fireworks for a damp squib.

This is going to be one ofthe largest ornamental explosions Glasgow has ever witnessed. Months of planning have gone into it, but it’s nothing new to him. Armed with only a stop watch and a special unextinguishable taper he is an old hand at making sure that the fireworks go up and in time to the music.

He already has the 1981 Royal, 1984 Liverpool Garden, Radio City Anniversary and Kevin Keegan’s Farewell Firework Displays to his credit. 9.59pm: he hasn't even had time to sample a can from the sponsors, McEwans Lager. His three

assistants stare at the oversize stop-watch. This is a precision event. The time between the portiire contacting the blue touchpaper and the eruption of colour in the sky has been meticulously calculated....10pm.

What would be the worse thing that could go wrong I asked Hillary; ‘Well, it could rain . . . Butactually not even the rain would really stop us.’ One thing he will not be hoping iorwill be the thick haar that set in at Edinburgh's display a couple of years ago. So worried were those firework organisers that the next yearthey laid on a few special low level fireworks!

lfyou are at the best viewpoint, the car park of the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre, you will see Alan Hillary’s wizardry at work, a volcanic spectacular synchronised to the theme music from Star Wars, Superman and E.T., the 1812 Overture, rock and classical selections besides. (You shouldn‘t miss it - look towards the Glasgow Garden Festival site.)

It lasts 25 minutes and ends with a message blazing on a 30 foot high framework of bamboo built by a Hampshire man with 50 years of firework-writing experience. Look out too for the special part of the display designed to light up Glasgow's sky in the colours of the sponsors.(They don't have typewriters in Hampshire.) A shuttle bus service will return from the SECC car park to George Square at 10.30pm. (Alastair Scott)
