This isn't just to criticise Wildcat’s touring show for not being something else tor all the best moments seemed to be when the company was allowed to poke tun at the Scots entertainer. Rab Handleigh‘s Scots hotel cabaret was something to masochistically enjoy. Elsewhere, however, I really wasn't sure what writers David Anderson and David MacLennan were on about.
Set in a Highland hotel's deserted bar the desperate innkeeper played by Myra McFadyen is prepared to do anything to ensure that an all too rare American couple stay. ll this means pretending that they are all MacGregors (the American husband is on an ancestor search) then that’s all right. Likewise the ‘natural’ diet of baked beans is denied in lavour ol Taste ol Scotland nonsense. The theme is clear enough the Scots don’t mind

It's a scenario thatallows Myra McFadyen! to don many a MacGregor disguise — i and it is only her perlormance that f gives the show any structure at all. Despite her energetic work however the play— it that is what it is— i completely disintegrates as it attempts to lollow up some bizarre line about the Americans being responsible tor a depopulating explosion which has turned the whisky blue. The Scots are not iustwilling to look silly to make a last buck apparently but are playing a dangerous game inviting the Americans to take over and destroy Scotland. And I didn’t think the Brits needed any help when it comes to i placing dangerous installations on Scottish soil. . . Dounreay?
