ART & EXHIBITIONSLIST-

In just over 30 years Aleksander Zyw has moved from microscope to meteor. His work is an elusive blend oi complexity and simplicity, a series at experiments, variations on a theme.

Zyw’s long career (he is now 80) has been touched by the colour and plein air painting of Paris in the 1930’s, by his appointment as otticial warartlst to the troops at his homeland, Poland, and by his adopted countries oi Scotland and Italy. The latter was to win his affection and after many years ot residence in the Dean Village, Edinburgh, he was linally enticed to live among the warm olive groves.

Though large in size, taking up almost the entire upstairs space at the Gallery oi Modern Art, the exhibition oi his work since 1957 ‘The Nature oi Painting’, clearly shows the limitations on source material he has imposed on himsell. Zyw's tireless examinations oi the natural, spiritual and aesthetic were carried out with the help oi only a handlul oi objects. His earliest series in the exhibition, was inspired by the tinted microscopic slides ot science. The vine and tern watercolours in bright Kandinsky colours are repeated, deliciously painted in thick, creamy oils. Vine lll glows with the red and orange of autumn and tire, while Vine It looks cool in the mauve and yellow oi spnng.

In the late sixties, Zyw moved on to study two pieces at olive wood. His paintings reveal images which appear to have been locked in their very nature —the subtle colours ot ageing bone

.luly. Zyw‘s work from the Fifties to the Eighties has been an investigation of nature. painting and the greater forces ofspirit. Resident in Edinburgh’s Dean Village for many years. this Polish artist has followed a course apart from the trends and fashions of the art world and has carved a unique position for his painting.
