The first of this week’s two concerts to be recorded for future transmission by the BBC. Geoffrey Allen is the soloist in Lalo’s Symphonic Espagnole for Violin and Orchestra and also on the programme is Wagner’s Faust Overture and Mozart’s Symphony N03L

Free. 7.30pm (audience to be seated by 7.25pm) "Tis the gift to be simple’ is the well known and delightful tune in Copland‘s Appalachian Spring, but if there are any such melodies in the other two works on this evening’s programme is open to question. But definitely worth taking the rare chance to hear are Diversions for Orchestra by Irving Fine and Symphony No 1 by Ellen Taaffe Zwilich.

0 National Youth Brass Band oi Scotland City Hall, Candleriggs. Tickets: 5525961. £2 (£1). 7.30pm. This talented group of youngsters, presented by the Scottish Amateur Music Association, are usually well worth hearing.

0 St Giles’ at Six St Giles’ Cathedral, High Street. Free at door. 6pm. The Roxburgh Trio provide early evening music in the impressive setting of St Giles’ Cathedral.

MONDAY 18 Glasgow

0 Organ Recital Glasgow Cathedral. 7.30pm. £2 at door. Thomas Trotter, currently organist at St Margaret‘s, Westminster, continues the celebrations for the 8501h anniversary of Glasgow Cathedral. The programme will include Mendelssohn’s Sonata No 3 in A major, Bach’s 2 Leipzig chorales and Danse Macabre by Saint-Saens.

TUESDAY 19 Edinburgh

0 Edinburgh Ouartet Red Drawing Room, Hopetoun House, South Queensferry. Tickets: 228 1155 (Usher Hall) or 332 8691 (E0). 8pm. £8. Slightly out of the Festival, the Edinburgh Quartet give the last of their Summer Evening Concert series in the elegant surroundings of Hopetoun House. Programme includes Mozart’s famous ‘Hunt’ Quartet, the ltalian Serenade by Wolf, Puccini’s Crisantemi and, maybe for the tourists, Dvorak’s ‘The American’ Quartet. Tickets include wine, savouries and a good look round.

WEDNESDAY 20 Glasgow

Michael Collins, the quite young, but extremely talented clarinettist, joins the BBC SSO for Hindemith’s Clarinet Concerto and even though they’re in their fine new concert hall, the orchestra opens with Kodaly’s Theatre Overture. Nocturnes and Arias by Thea Musgrave complete the programme.
