The sikus orzamponas, played above by one at Rumillaita, are one ol a battery oi exotic instruments the live man vocal and instrumental group will

be bringing to Glasgow on 6 and 7 Sept.

As part at 3 workers co-operative in La Paz, Bolivia they make all the instruments themselves including the quenas, an end blown flute, traditionally made from the leg bone of a Llama, but now more often in wood; the charango, a small ten stringed instrument played like a cross between

a mandoline and a ukelele, which supplies the insistent rhythmic undenow; the bombo, as its name suggests, a deep and resonant drum and the chajchas made from the hooves ot sheep or Llamas. The group’s music is part traditional, part composed in the lolk idioms oi the Andean cultures of the continent, yet is entirely accessible to a celtic audience —the jury at this year’s Llangollen International Eisteddfod awarding them first place!
