Foodies go for faxes. They like their personal files bulging like full stomachs. Now they can feed their faxes with (food Food Facts 32 page guides to eating in. so far. three capital cities.

A few issues ago. this magazine noted that contrary to reports in a Sunday newspaper. that Norman and Ilill. makers of Filofax (the system which this Christmas is available in a just slightly tasteless reindeer hide bound version). had no plans for an Edinburgh food guide. Well no. but (‘onrad Wilson ofThe Scotsman did. Together with Anna Maggio. a London-based food writer. he has put together guides covering London. Paris and Edinburgh.

Originally the designers' toy. the fax is all about style and in production terms anyway. Wilson and Maggio seem to have realised this. The guides (which also come in stapled pocketfhandbag editions— surely an unnecessary concession to those who refuse to be hip) look and feel good. Designed by leading London designers Minale Tattersfield in tasteful pastel colours they have. in restaurant-speak. an inviting ambience. KITCHEN RANGE

If you are the stay-at-home type who prefers to eat in, you might be interested in a superb range of designer coffee pots available from InHouse (28 Howe Street, Edinburgh). Designed by people such as Aldo Rossi and Richard Sapper, they are as much art as kitchen furniture. Prices range from around £40 to just over £50. The

Intended primarily for visitors it's good to know that. as in the case of the Doric where its legendary proprietor Jimmy McGuffie is referred to. they are getting the detailed ingredient list to Edinburgh Eating. Just occasionally the otherwise good cross-referencing of entries breaks down. The husband and wife team that run Le Mange Tout are. we learn. the team that transformed Duncan's Land. but because that restaurant isn‘t listed there is no indication where it is or whether the couple still run it. The very best guides stand alone making redundant other works of reference but to a large extent these guides suffice each has a map. entries have addresses. phone numbers. opening

Espresso coffee makers illustrated are by Aldo Hossi - 3-cup size £46.50, 6-cup size £53.95.

InHouse also stock cups, saucers etc to accompany them as well as furniture, gifts and other items especially interesting since Christmas is approaching. Open Mon—Fri 9.30am—6pm (Thurs mam-7pm); $319.30am—5pm.
