Carol Kidd’s reputation continues to increase beyond these shores. ‘The Jazz Singers‘. a new authoritative publication on the music’s history from the blues through vaudeville and the big band era to the various tacets of modern jazz, reports on the range and depth of the Kidd voice and talent. With her long experience in Trad bands as a teenager in the Sixties, years in cabaret and clubs and then an important and lengthy spell with Jimmy Feighan, the great Glasgow sax and vibes man and her concert guest at the Mitchell Theatre (14 Dec), Carol has

garnered a wealth ot song and evolved a mature jazz delivery. With hertrio she also appears atthe Jazz Band Ball, Edinburgh (17 Dec) in the company at Mike Hart’s Society Syncopators, George Penman’s Jazzmen and a trio led by the venerable and vital Benny Waters. Courtney Pine (see photo) is gifted, a sharp dresser and one at the tew young black jazzmen on the London scene. With his Jazz Warriors he has become a totem ol the new wave urban jazzers, and his cult status is reflected in the venues he now plays. Good music though. Glasgow (12 Dec).
