MUSIC LIST

FRIDAY 19 '

Glasgow

0 Doctor and the Medics QMU. University Gardens. 9pm. £8. All night students‘ party. The headlining band‘s attempts to cover ‘Waterloo' and ‘Spirit In The Sky‘ have been hilarious. and other than from a comic point of view they are totally without merit. Among the other bands who are pzlaying— there are ten are Origin Sins (again) and The Cretins who I am told bear a ‘slight Ramones influence' and usually play ten minute sets with about 20 songs! 0 The Shamen Subterraneans. (ireenock. 9pm. A real psychedelic band but in view of the success of Doctor And The Medics. authenticity has little bearing on success. Their ‘Young Till Yesterday" single was recently a Melody Maker single of the week. and the Shatnen can be guaranteed to continue coming up with good songs throughout 1987.

0 Rich Freelall Windy's. Paisley. 8pm. Free.

Edinburgh

0 Run Rig and We Free Kings Playhouse Theatre. (ireenside Place. 7.30pm. £9. £8.17 See Feature. Another gig for the gaelic rock group who have a massive following around the country. and a devoted one. Live gigs tend to he realcelebrations. Hopefully. We Free Kings. whose brand of folk is much more raw and raucous than the headliners. will go down a storm.

0 Ransom (Towns. High Street. 9pm. Free.

SATURDAY 20 ' Glasgow

0 Trident Ladyton Bar. Alexandra. 7.30pm. Free. A hard working heavy metal hand. Any further comment. and 1 would end up in court.

0 Run Rig Barrowland. (iallowgate. 7.3(lpm. See Feature. Headliners Run Rig have just released another single called ‘The Work Song' —- and remain very popular in Scotland. After all there are few Scottish hands that can play at the Playhouse and Barrowland and remain almost wholly unknown on a UK basis. For me. though. far more interesting are the two support hands Wee Free Kings. who are notable for their originality and some excellent live shows. and the ;\lc(‘luskey Brothers whose album was one of the unexpected highlights of 1986.

Edinburgh

0 Bald Cormorant Lord Darnley. West Port. 3pm. Free. See Sat 13. o Leaps And Bounds Preservation Hall. Victoria Street. 9pm. Free. 0 Indian Summer (Towns. High Street. 9pm. Free.

suuov 21

Glasgow

0 Fruits of Passion/Keeping Up With The Joneses Henry Afrika‘s. York

Street. 9pm. £4. Special gig for Radio Clyde's ‘Cash For Kids‘ appeal. The Fruits of Passion are an enjoyable live band. although they leave very little impression. and Keeping Up With The Joneses have supposedly just signed to EMl. Should be a good night fora good cause.

0 Love and Money/Goodbye Mr Mackenzie/Wyoming Pavilion Theatre. 121 Renfield Street. 332 1846. 7.30pm. £4. The Dance Factory Christmas Party. All three are potentially super bands. and if one or more of them live up to their potential then this could be one of the best gigs of the year.

0 The Beat Poets Hard Sell. Fury Murrays. Maxwell Street. 10.30pm. £3. As part of the Rocket 88 Anniversary’Christmas Party. The Beat Poets are a totally instrumental band. who play really short sets ( 18 mins) and get described as ‘Perfect‘ by various hipsters. There‘s only one way of finding out go along and rub shoulders with the ‘stars.‘

Edinburgh

0 Tam White and The Dexters Preservation Hall. Victoria Street. 9pm. Free. See Sun 14.

0 Billy Jones Lord Darnley. West Port. 9pm. Free. Pop’folk.

MONDAY 22

Glasgow

0 Blues 'n' Trouble Rooftops. Sauchiehall Street. 1(1.3()pm. Popular Edinburgh band. who despite their hard work and critical acclaim. are still dated and ultimately rather boring live.

0 Kevin McDermott Band Fury Murrays. Maxwell Street. lli.3()pm. Fresh from a short appearance on The Tube. Kevin McDermott plays his first proper gig with a full accompanying band including his brother Jim (drums). Demo evidence suggests that Kevin is a good ouside bet as a Lloyd Cole type success in 1987.

Edinburgh

0 The Pastels and The Vaselines'l‘he ()nion Cellar. The Mission. Victoria Street. Scotland‘s original anorak band. led by the infamoust sulky Stephen Pastel. ()therwise sweet songs flawed by generally dour delivery.

TUESDAY 23

Glasgow

0 Blues ’n‘ Trouble Alloa Town Hall. Alloa. 7.30pm. See what I mean about them being hard working?

0 Loose ButTight Cardinal Folly. 197 Pitt Street. 10.30pm. New. relatively unknown local band attempting to showcase their talents.

CHRISTMAS EVE y

Glasgow

0 Gary Glitter Barrowland. (iallowgate. 7.3(1pm. Will he be wearing his Santa (‘laus outfit? Will he sing ‘Another Rock 'n‘ Roll Christmas“? Will he have lost any weight in the last few years? Will he be giving free sleeping pills to the audience? Who cares? Anyone with

an iota ofcommon sense will be otherwise engaged.

BOXING DAY ~ Glasgow

0 The BMX Bandits Subterraneans. Greenock. 9pm. Knowing the BMX Bandits. Douglas will probably be giving out Christmas presents to everyone in the audience or a bit of Christmas cake at the very least. They are such a nice band. and they do some nice Orange Juice type songs with a tasteful sense of humour too

NEW YEAR’S EVE Glasgow

0 Marillion Barrowland. Gallowgate 7.30pm. £7.50. Just when all the

pubs. clubs and universities/colleges decide to take a break over Christmas. and leave us nothing to get excited about. what do we get? Marillion. On leaving Barrowland all fans should be reminded that the year just commencing is 1987. and not 1973 as Marillion would like them to think. In any case Bing Hitler is on STV‘s Hogmanay Show. which means that Kenneth McKellar will probably be guesting on backing vocals for Marillion.
