ART & EXHIBITIONS LIST

NORTHERN LIGHTS

The lirst painting in the current

exhibition of work by the Norwegian artist, Frans Widerberg, at the Scottish National Gallery at Modern Art is a sell-portrait: the impact ot a young man’s steady and open gaze remains through canvas alter canvas ol visionary work. In the lithograph, ‘Dreamer in a Landscape‘, a ligure stands, looking into a deep blue torest ot pine trees. His arms are lolded as it the dream makes him cold, lonely. The next panel, ‘Messenger’ reveals a bringer ol sunshine and good news entering the world on a tightrope. Widerberg reveals great optismism and longing in his confident use of colour and generous appliance ot paint, but at the heart of the dream, there seems to be doubt.

An admirerot Edvard Munch, Widerberg also takes the transcendent lora bedlellow. As in Munch’s paintings, many images emerge lrom rich tracks at paint and swirling backgrounds. Out at a potentially abstract chaos, suggesting the elements, comes an impression or a depiction of man‘s place in that ordered chaos.

A recurrent image in the paintings is that of the horse: these beasts stand on long spindly legs and have enormous leet. They look as it they are made out ot clay, the great leet totally essential tor balance. Butthis image perpetually suggests the vulnerability ot the horse which, when young, has legs which are thin and out of proportion, and therelore also suggests birth and hope
