Some mighttake a lifetime to achieve this. but Jim Jarmusch has taken a mere two pictures to establish his uniqueness. His debut effort. the hilariously cool ‘StrangerThan Paradise‘. and the current offering both fit in to their own little genre‘ best defined by Jarmusch himself as ‘neo-beat—noir-comedy'. Here we have an aesthetic mapped out by the sparse. peppery slang of 805‘ beatniks. who populate an American urban terrain half-remembered from the grainy monochrome images of 503' B-movies.

Yes, it all looks like a hip yankophile‘s wet-dream. but it's the dreamily amiable craziness that gets you. In 'Down By Law‘ three assorted. desperate characters Zack (Tom Waits). Jack (John Lurie) and Robert (Robert Benigni) are thrown together in prison. The former, a pair of abrasive hepcats with woman trouble. while the ltialian tourist is a hapless innocent abroad with an endearineg idisyncratic ragbag of English phrases (‘lam good egg. no?‘) and a penchant
