NEW YEAR NOTES

Performances olcontemporary Scottish chambermusicin Scotland seemto appearin sporadic outbursts. Maybe it‘s wishlul thinking, butcould it bethatthese occasional sightings of fresh green shoots pushingthrough lrom the bulging bulbs below ground are becoming more frequent? And new work by our own living composers is no longer a suspicious rarity. but is becoming naturallyand easily integrated intoprogrammeplanning generally? Thislortnightwould seem to indicate so.

The major contribution. on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 Jan. comes lrom the excellentNew Music Groupol Scotland. withdirectorEdward Harper. At Glasgow's Third Eye Centre and then inthe inlormal atmosphere olthe bar area otthe Queen's Hall in Edinburgh. theirprogramme isdevotedto contemporary Scottish chambermusic. Although notallthe composers are Scottish in origin and notalltheir musicisbrand new, they do all have strong Scottish connections. Wilma Paterson. Lyell Cresswell. Thea Musgrave.
