0 MIM Livingston v Paisley Glasgow Airport Coasters Arena. Falkirk 2.30pm. £2 (£1). The all-conquering Murray. currently looking to transfer into the breakaway League down south. are talking in terms ofa 100 point winning margin this one. but Paisley are likely to give them a harder time than that. and will doubtless win neutral support as underdigs. A shock is unlikely. but Airport will make a fight ofit before the television cameras.

0 Falkirkv Celtic Brockville. Falkirk (100 yards from Grahamston Station). It took a late Mo Johnston winner to settle this last time. but the home side are unlikely to fare better on this occasion.

o Hibernian v Dundee Utd Easter Road. Edinburgh (Buses 4, 15, 42, 44). Alex Miller seems to have stabilised Hibs' decline. and they will be looking to take at least a point from a Tannadice side looking less than convincing at present.

0 Motherwell v Clydebank Fir Park. Motherwell (All Motherwell buses pass ground). Clash ofpotential and genuine relegation candidates respectively. which the home side must win tooan some daylight between the clubs.

0 Rangerstberdeen Ibrox. Glasgow (2 mins from Ibrox Underground). Aberdeen were the last side to beat Rangers. but suffered at the hands of Souness (and the referee) last time at Ibrox. The visitors have found goals hard to come by since Ian Porterfield took charge. and they face the most parsimonious defence in the League. A continuation of the Rangers drive for the title looks likely.

0 St Mirren v Hamilton Love Street. Paisley ( 1() mins from Gilmour Street station). Bottom ofthe table Hamilton re-discovered the lost art ofgoal scoring over New Year. but remain more than generous at the back. and cannot really expect to take much from Paisley. FIRS'I‘DIVISION

SECONDS OUT

The Third Round ol the Scottish Cup brings in the big clubs lorthe lirst time. The tie oi the round is the clash between Aberdeen and Celtic at Pittodrie (live on Scottish Television, Sun 31), where home advantage could well prove crucial, but Premier League sides clash at Ibrox, where Rangers are unlikely to be upset by the uniortunate Hamilton, who will draw solace lrom their cheque, and at Brockville, where Falkirk and Clydebank will light out the kind oltie neither will relish.

Despite the oil-quoted Berwick ailair, genuine upsets are rarer in this competition than in its English counterpart, but neither oi the Edinburgh clubs will be anticipating an easy passage against good First Division opposition. Hibs disposed oi Dunlermline in this round last year, but will iind Jim Leishman’s title-chasing side a diliicult proposition. Hearts, meanwhile, lace those (other) notorious dashers oi Gorgie title aspirations, Kilmarnock, who have struggled in recent weeks, but ran Dundee Utd close in the Fourth Round last year.

The only non-league clubs to have survived to this stage have yet to play their Second Round tie as i write, but the winners oi the lnverness Caley v Spartans match are rewarded, ii that is the word, with a trip to St Mirren. Alex Smith’s managerial takeover at Paisley has been relatively painless thus lar,

.er‘. .. .

and the Premier League side should prove tar too strong ior either contender. Both doubtless dreamed at more lucrative opposition.

Motherwell take on Partick Thistle in anothertie which should produce a home win, while outstanding Second Round ties may yet add iixtures at Meadowbank, it they survive the trip to Stirling, and Queen's Park, who travel to Perth. The rash ol postponements in the recent ireezing weather may lead to unplayed ties edging out the scheduled lixtures, so make sure any match you are thinking oi attending is actuallythe one being played. Replays are likely to go on in the iollowing midweek. (Kenny Mathieson)
