ROCK

FRIDAY 6

Glasgow

0 Centurion The Doune. 9pm. Free. Easily the best heavy metal band to come out of Glasgow since . . .em. the last one.

0 The Straight Men Riverside Tavern. Gorbals. 9pm. Free. Popular pub-rock. Residency.

0 Rue and Cry/The Candy Kings QMU. 8pm. £2.50. Students and friends only. Hue and Cry are easily one of the best bands in Scotland just now and their debut single for Circa Records ‘1 Refuse‘ seemed to suffer unfairly at the hands of Radio One producers. who gave it very little support. The Candy Kings have a bad name. some good songs and a lot of promise.

Edinburgh

0 Microdisney Hoochie Coochie Club. West Tollcross. 10.30pm. Prominent Irish band trying to break through to the mainstream with their third LP proper A Crooked Mile. They drive our resident film critic into raptures. but their well-crafted AOR sound. often compared to Steely Dan (and what‘s wrong with that!). doesn‘t appeal to all. Precise and cutting anti-imperialist sentiments in some of their songs might ensure they go down better here than the Home Counties.

0 The Primevals The Venue. Lothian Road. First Scottish band to have their John Peel session released on the very handy Strange Fruit label. and very popular on the continent. supporting The Cramps on last year‘s tour. Rock 'n’ roll. with a hefty slap of the blues. Live. they're pretty hard to ignore.

0 La Paz Preservation Hall. Victoria Street. 9.30pm. Heavy metal from popular local band. As oftonight a cover charge of£ 1 will be charged from anyone arriving after 9.30pm on Fridays and Saturdays. and 9pm on Sundays. Reckon I‘d pay that to get away from La Paz.
