concentration can be spellbinding.
This year Carlotta lkeda, iounder oi Ariadone, appears in a solo periormance, UTT, choreographed by the director oi the company, Ko Muroboshi. Though originally made in 1981, Utt has evolved with periormance, during extensive
tours oi Europe.
Utt is sound, an exhalation. For lkeda and Murobushi, it is linked to birth and death. Painted white in a white swirl oi rain and space, the dancer must will her body to take on the character oi those two opposing forces.
Though begun post Second World War, in Japan, butoh dance now has a committed iollowing in Europe. lkeda is surprised at ‘the West’s ability to welcome such a diiierent culture.’ The secret lies perhaps in the determination to be tree of restriction, cutting ties with all other forms at dance, ballet, traditional and modern. lkeda explains. ‘The butoh dancer cannot have any link. . . and is thereby condemned to remain a stateless traveller.’ (Alice Bain)
