For Jules Craniield, directing the play for Focus Theatre’s production this Maytest, the play is ‘a brilliantly funny but moving piece of writing, dealing with what is always an awful thing to cope with . . . It is one ol the best plays I’ve tried to produce.’
Cranlield’s recent works include plays by Caryl Churchhlll (a ‘hot lavourite’), Rona Munro’s ‘Fugue’ and Sarah Daniel’s ‘Masterpieces’. She established Focus Theatre in 1982 ‘to do new work and centre on women’s writing particularly'. This is by no means a strict limitation, however, and at this year’s Edinburgh Festival the company will take on a predominantly male castto present Larry Kramer’s palnlully moving AIDS play ‘The Normal Heart’.
