From the USA comes Clackmannan-born Alasdair Fraser (see photo) who with Paul Machiis on keyboard fits in some festival gigs (Glencoe, weekend of the 16 May) and an Edinburgh concert (20 May). Scots fiddle has few more beautiful and assured exponents and the musical partnership is imaginative and tasteful. Listen to their album Skyedance. Also from the Americas, but from the long shadow cast to the south of the States, come the late VictorJara's musicians. The nine-piece Duilapayun (Edinburgh 22 May) were, like lnti lllimani, on tour abroad as Chilean ambassadors when Allende was deposed and murdered. They continue the work of the Chilean New Song Movement in exile with their dense mix of traditional music forms and modern stagecraft. Supporting are local groups Sun House Two and the Easy Club. Political song is the locus of a whole weekend at Glasgow’s Mayfest (Arts Centre 15, 16, 17 May). A Left Turns concert is competed by the Star Club’s Arthur Johnston on the Friday and Saturday nights. Saturday evening has a concert by the Political Song Network who comprise the multiple talents of Leon Rosselson and Roy

Bailey with the remarkable voice and style of Sandra Kerr, and Maria Tolley and Jim Woodland. Workshops are being held at the Arts Centre by the Network from 11am on such subjects as ‘Women’s Song Writing,’ ‘The Role Of Music In Political Song' and ‘Political Songs and Non-Political Audiences.‘ Stramash (GAC 17 May) are a more circumspect and talented group of friends who portray a more couthy vision of Scotland and Ireland through all sorts of traditional and folk song, all exceptionally well sung and played. Some is self-penned, but instantly traditional did you know that their Adam McNaughton actually wrote the Jeely Piece Song? (Norman Chalmers)
