ROCK

FRIDAY 29 Glasgow

0 Latin Duarter Strathclyde UU. John Street. 552 1895. Touring to promote a new album Mick and Caroline which should be worth your attention ifit lives up to the standards of their debut Modern Times which was home to the excellent single ‘Radio Africa‘.

0 Gaye Bikers on Acid Rooftops. Sauchiehall Street. 332 5883. 10.30pm. £3. Having recently topped the indie charts with ‘Nosedive Karma‘ there should be a good crowd for tonight‘s events. Popular among goths. I will not be there.

0 Beastie Boys Barrowlands. London Road. 552 4601. 7.30pm. £6. Nothing like a bit ofoutrage which the Beasties supply. despite being a musical vacuum. I found it quite amusing that the Daily Record recently glorified their outrageousness. cretinism and sexism with a centre page feature. while their sister paper. the Daily Mirror was furiously trying to ban them from this country. Hypocrisy in the media? Never.

0 Comedy of Errors Boulevard Hotel. Duntocher. 337 2381. 9pm. Comedy Of Errors have been flaunting their own interpretation ofproressive mentors Genesis for several years with very little reward.

O The Straight Men Riverside Tavern. Gorbals. 429 3981. 9pm. Free. One ofthe better local pub rock bands.

0 Stranger Red Lion. Prestwick. 9pm. Free. More well played, but dated rock. Such a young(ish) band should be doing something more exciting than this.

0 Jamie Barnes and Cochise Platini‘s. 115 West Nile Street. 9pm. Free. Well worn pub rockers.

o The Hardy Boys Windy‘s Bar. Paisley. 9pm.

Edinburgh

0 The Voice or the Beehive The Venue. Calton Road. 557 3073. Doors open 7.30pm. Touring with the Madness rhythm section. the bright-eyed Californian beat oftheir single Just A City is doing well in the indie charts. Recommended.

0 Powerhouse Boogie Band Preservation Hall. Victoria Street. 226 3816. £1 after 9.30pm. Rhythm ‘n‘ blues.

0 Wasted Days (Tobe confirmed). Rolling Stone. Greenside Place. 558 1270. 9.30pm. Late 60s-inf1uenced duo with drum machine. and occasional Dylanesque twang to the vocals.

o The Rootsie Tootsie Band The Cavern. Cowgate. 226 5641. Blues ‘n‘ boogie.

SATURDAY 30

Glasgow

0 Gary Glitter/The Force Barrowland. London Road. 552 4601. 7.30pm. £5. These days Gary Glitter would probably pass as a bouncer at Barrowland so why he should be on stage there is beyond me. Comedy fans will be out in force. a corny link. as the East Kilbride band who support are the only possible reason for being at this gig.

o The Proclaimers Weavers. Maxwellton Drive. Paisley. 887 5143. 8pm. Only Scottish date at the moment for the Proclaimers. and just in time to coincide with their debut single ‘Throw the R Away‘. My advice is buy the album and see this ifat all possible.

0 The Same Animals Boulevard Hotel. Duntocher. 377 2381 . 9pm. Best gig at the Boulevard for a while. and home territory for the Same Animals.

0 Mary Kiani Baby Grand. Elmbank Gardens. 248 4942. 8pm. Free. Excellent singer in residency. Well worth a look.

0 Big George and The Business Platini's. West Nile Street. 9pm. Free. Blues.

0 The Dansenes St Georges Bar. 316 St Georges Road. 9pm. Free. More competent but uninspired pub rock.

Edinburgh

0 Bald Cormorant Lord Darnley. West Port. 229 4341. 3pm. Free. 60s' R&B. country—rock. jam atmosphere.

0 Deacon Blue Moray House Student Union. Holyrood Road. 556 8455. Students and guests only. This should be a good one. Deacon Blue being one ofthe best. if most conventional. bands in Glasgow. Their debut album is out now on CBS.

0 Toto and The Bostons and Stealin’ The Blues Preservation Hall. Victoria Street. As usual. Toto‘s session in the afternoon is free. while getting in after 9.30pm to see the later band will cost £1.

0 After Eight Mince Négociants. Lothian Street. 225 6313. 9pm. Free. Proficient and pleasant jazz-funk combo.

0 Blueiinger The Cavern. Cowgate. 226 5641. Fine rhythm ‘n‘ blues band.
